This Grade II listed property has a rich history that was essential to respect and enhance during the careful renovation of this extraordinary family home.
Originally built in the late 19th century as a Summer House for the owners of the estate the Pavilion resides on, it faced dereliction and even fire over the course of its history. The clients wanted to find a way to expand their home while adhering to strict historical limitations, enhancing the Pavilion’s unique features and maintaining harmony with the surrounding Grade II historic parkland. The core aim of this project was to meticulously restore the Pavilion while seamlessly integrating modern living spaces, cleverly concealed behind glass that reflects the surrounding pavilion and gardens. The bathroom and kitchen were relocated to a side and rear extension, discreetly separating the Pavilion from the new addition.
Because of the challenges faced in this project, including financial constraints, planning issues and meeting meticulous regulatory standards, the management of this renovation had to be handled with the utmost care. Luis Trevino Architects developed the project from conceptual design to construction documents. RDA then took over and worked collaboratively with a trusted contractor and suppliers from the project management to the final stages to ensure that the project was completed within budget, integrating cost-effective choices with thoughtful interior design.
The Pavilion embodies the RDA ethos in a number of ways. From prioritising sustainability and eco-conscious design and optimising limited space to innovative material choices, this is a landmark project that showcases the very best in historic retrofit design.
"The mirroring of the meadow and the old house in the glass is stunningly beautiful, utterly contemporary yet meditative and sympathetic to the old parts of the building.
Inside you have the sense of being in the middle of nature and in a warm, spacious environment at the same time. The blend of old and new is seamless, and combination makes people stop in their tracks and smile. Everyone wants to visit, and when they do they want to stay.
We still can’t believe this is our home."
